May is a month full of activities for those who suffer from asthma and allergies. The entire month of May 2022 has been designated Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). At the beginning of the month, on May 3rd, 2022, the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) is hosting World Asthma Day.

World Asthma Day

Presented each year by GINA in collaboration with the World Health Organization, World Asthma Day is intended to raise awareness of asthma around the world. Asthma cannot be cured but with proper diagnosis and treatment it can be controlled, and the number of dangerous complications vastly reduced.

The theme for 2022 is, “Closing the Gaps in Asthma Care” with the focus being on providing the testing and treatment available equitably around the world. These gaps in asthma care can mean the difference between living a full and healthy life and dying young of uncontrolled asthma attacks. Some of the asthma care gaps to be addressed include:

  • The gaps in care between different socioeconomic, age, and ethnic groups
  • The gaps in medicine availability in the same groups
  • Gaps in education and training for patients and health care providers between different countries and between rural and urban populations

GINA hopes that through further education about the realities of asthma and the need for early testing, diagnosis, and treatment, progress can be made in closing these gaps and providing every asthma sufferer, regardless of location, nationality, income, or education level, relief from their symptoms.

Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month

May is the month that many people who suffer from seasonal allergies begin to feel their effects. It is also a time of year that asthma attacks increase, perhaps brought on by seasonal allergies. In light of these facts, AAFA chose May as the month to try to raise awareness of these conditions and how best to alleviate their suffering from them.

It is estimated that 65 million Americans are affected by allergies and asthma or both. AAFA calls out all Americans to join them for 31 Days of Action to raise awareness of asthma and allergies. They want people to know that although there are no cures for either allergies or asthma, there are many treatments available for both.

Their focus this year is dispelling myths about both of these conditions and activities include 5 watch parties during which they will air videos on their website and social media channels. Entitled “Knock Out Myths” Volumes 1 through 5, these videos hope to separate facts from myths about the causes, symptoms, and treatments of both asthma and allergies.
