Mental Illness and Health Awareness Events in October

October 2022 is a time to consider the importance of mental health. The first full week, October 2nd through the 8th, is Mental Illness Awareness Week. October 10th is designated as World Mental Health Day by the World Health Organization (WHO) and National Depression Screening Day is October 13th. All these events are designed to raise awareness of the importance of mental health to a person's overall health and wellness and to promote the top ways of treatment and prevention.

Mental Illness Awareness Week

Sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Mental Illness Awareness Week was created to raise awareness of the prevalence of mental illness and to try to reduce the stigma associated with those who suffer from it. Officially established by Congress in 1990, this week is the time for mental health care providers and their patients to share their experiences, talk about the progress that has been made and provide insight into the future of mental health care.

The theme of Mental Illness Awareness Week in 2022 is 'Together For Mental Health'. The goal is to get people to recognize that mental health is a societal concern and only by coming together can we support those who suffer from it and those who fight to cure it.

World Mental Health Day

Sponsored by WHO and the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH), World Mental Health Day is on October 10th of each year. The theme for 2022 is, Make mental health for all a global priority. The goal for this day is to promote research and understanding into the causes and prevention of mental illness. The hope is that by raising awareness of mental health issues it will encourage both those who suffer from it and those who care about them to seek help instead of living with shame.

National Depression Screening Day

Every year, October 6th is designated as National Depression Screening Day. Like any other medical screening test, a depression screening is designed to alert medical providers and their patients to the presence of depression and anxiety before those conditions begin to cause problems. This day is designed to boost awareness of depression screening tests and how having one done may help to prevent the debilitating side effects of this mental health disease.

To commemorate the day, colleges, high schools, clinics and many employers offer free depression screenings.
