What is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic condition that causes red, itchy scaly patches. You’ll typically see these appear on your knees, elbows, abdomen, and scalp. It’s a common condition that currently has no cure, but can be managed with the right medication.

Psoriasis affects more than 7.5 million adults in the U.S. There are five types of psoriasis, and they can appear in different parts of the body. Plaque psoriasis is the most common. These include:

  • Guttate psoriasis
  • Pustular psoriasis
  • Plaque psoriasis
  • Inverse psoriasis
  • Erythrodermic psoriasis

Treatment

To be treated for psoriasis your doctor will need to diagnose the type you have. A dermatologist will help diagnose and create a treatment plan for you. Some types of psoriasis can get confused with eczema. Psoriatic arthritis is also commonly confused with arthritis.

After a psoriasis diagnosis, your doctor will make a treatment plan for you to follow. This could include different types of medications to apply to your skin or take internally. These treatments are often anti-inflammatory drugs.

Corticosteroids are a common treatment for most types of psoriasis. Many doctors will recommend applying this steroid cream to the affected area for relief. Your doctor may also suggest using this in conjunction with tazarotene, a retinoid which helps slow skin cell overgrowth and inflammation.

Synthetic vitamin D can help treat skin, nails, and scalp psoriasis. The cream works by flattening thick psoriasis and removing the scales. Your doctor will tell you how often to apply to your skin.

Coal tar is another common treatment your doctor may prescribe for scalp psoriasis.
