Healthy Lung Month and Lung Health Day 10/26

Save up to 88% on your medications

Lung disease kills millions of people around the globe each year. To bring awareness to the importance of healthy lungs and to remind people that most forms of lung disease, including asthma, chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, and cancer, are preventable, several organizations have joined together to present Healthy Lung Month and US Lung Health Day.

Healthy Lung Month

Promoted by the American Lung Association and several other American health organizations, Healthy Lung Month, October of each year, is a time to consider the benefits of healthy lungs. Very few people think about their lungs and breathing until there is a problem. By raising awareness not only of the various diseases and conditions that affect healthy lungs but also the steps people can take to avoid breathing difficulties, the American Lung Association hopes to decrease the overall number of people suffering from lung dysfunction.

The organizers of Lung Health Month hope that through their efforts people begin to understand the importance of clean air, both indoors and out and the problems that arise when people take in contaminants with every breath. They also want people to be aware of the steps they can take themselves to keep their lungs healthy. These include:

  • Quitting (or better yet, never starting) smoking
  • Regular exercise, especially types that raise your heart and breathing rates
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating a healthy diet that includes antioxidants

U.S. Lung Health Day

Created by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), U.S. Lung Health Day happens on the fourth Wednesday of each October. In 2022, it falls on the 26th of October. While the entire month of October is devoted to overall lung health, U.S. Lung Health Day was created to raise awareness of the chronic breathing conditions, like bronchitis, COPD and asthma, emphysema, and lung cancer, which accounts for over 13% of cancers diagnosed worldwide.

The AARC wants to educate people not only about the existence of these chronic and often fatal, breathing problems, but also methods of prevention that can be taken by individuals, organizations and the government to reduce the number of people suffering from these largely preventable conditions and save lives.
