Annual Wellness Check-Up: Why Getting Your Blood Drawn is Important

Updated on June 30th, 2022

Save up to 88% on your medications

Keeping up to date with your annual wellness checkup may be the single most important thing you can do to maintain your health and wellness. While it may seem like a hassle to schedule and go to an appointment with your doctor when you feel fine, it is important that you do so.

A wellness checkup does two important things for you. First, it sets a healthy baseline for all of your vital statistics. Things like your weight, blood pressure, pulse rate, and lab results will be noted at each visit. That way if you do have to return to the doctor for a problem, they know what is normal for you and can use any changes as a diagnostic tool.

The second reason to schedule a wellness visit is that it may catch developing problems that you are not aware of. Many health issues, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and cancers, have no real symptoms at first. Catching these issues before they become symptomatic makes it much more likely that you will be able to effectively treat them.

Why You Should Have Your Blood Drawn?

The results from a comprehensive blood panel will give both you and your doctor many insights into the inner workings of your body. When you give blood at the lab, they can test it for disease, hormone levels, blood sugar levels, cholesterol levels, and many other factors that can signal a problem if the levels are not where they are supposed to be.

When the doctor receives the results of your bloodwork, they may have a very clear picture of the state of your health. A high white blood cell count may mean that you are battling an infection. This can be treated with medication such as the antibiotic amoxicillin, erythromycin, and ciprofloxacin, before it becomes worse.

If your hormone levels are off, it may mean that there is a problem with one of the many glands in your boby that produce them. In many cases, these levels can be returned to normal with medication such as Synthroid or Tapazole, or lifestyle changes.

If your cholesterol is high, steps can be taken to lower it before it begins to clog your arteries and do damage to your heart and other organs. Sometimes lifestyle and eating habit changes are enough to lower your cholesterol to safe levels, but often atorvastatin or rosuvastatin, or another medication will be prescribed to speed the process along.
