It's almost time for the holiday season, which runs from Christmas to New Year's Day. The holiday season is a time of year to show your family and friends love. Though you can’t wait to enjoy the season, read these top tips that will help you and your family prepare for a happy and healthy holiday season.

Top Tips:

  1. Practice hygiene Keep your family safe by practicing regular hand washing. Wash your hands with soap and running water for at least 20 seconds to prevent the spread of germs. Remember it is flu season!
  2. Stay warm and dry  Wear appropriate clothing while outdoors to keep you warm and dry. Plan and get your light source, warm layers, gloves, hats, scarves, and waterproof boots ready for the holiday.
  3. Stress management Engage in stress management activities that will keep you energized. Take a break if you are stressed or overwhelmed. You can manage stress by connecting socially with loved ones and by getting plenty of sleep.
  4. Cease smoking   Active and passive smoking is a risk factor for many health conditions. Stay safe and enjoy a healthy holiday by avoiding smoking in all forms. For a healthy holiday season, don’t smoke!
  5. Be safe on the road Maintain road safety tips. Wear a helmet while riding a two-wheeler and fasten your seat belt while driving. Always buckle your children in the car using a child safety seat, booster seat, or seat belt according to their height, weight, and age. Don't speed, and NEVER drink and drive!
  6. Get screened  Ask your healthcare provider for a list of essential health screenings you are meant to do. You can also use this resource to check the necessary health screening for you and your family. The holiday season will afford you time to get screened for early detection of possible disease conditions before they get worse.
  7. Get vaccinated Strengthen your immune system with relevant vaccinations and stay protected during the holiday season. Vaccinations prevent you from contracting a disease or lessen the severity if you eventually contract it. Remember, it is flu season; did you get your flu shot?
  8. Protect your children  Prioritize your children's safety by keeping potentially dangerous playthings, food, household items, etc., out of their reach. Keep them safe from drowning, burns, falls, etc. by kid-proofing your home.
  9. Practice fire safety  Safeguard your life and properties with necessary fire safety techniques. Remember, most cases of fire outbreaks occur during the winter months. So, it is important to maintain fire safety precautions while using fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, candles, etc.
  10. Food hygiene  Cook your food properly to avoid food poisoning. Wash your hands before handling food items and disinfect open surfaces regularly to prevent cross-contamination of food.
  11. **Eat healthily ** Eat healthily to lower your risk of contracting diseases. Eat fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and minerals that protect the body against certain diseases. Reduce your intake of food with high fat, salt, and sugar content.
  12. Exercise regularly Make it a habit to exercise regularly. The holiday season gives you a chance to form new healthy habits and break the bad ones.
